“Self-esteem is how you value and respect yourself as a person – it is the opinion that you have of yourself inside and out. Self-esteem impacts how you take care of yourself, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Self-esteem is about your whole self, not just your body” – Canadian Mental Health Association, 2018 (retrieved from: https://cmha.bc.ca/documents/body-image-self-esteem-and-mental-health/)
Self-esteem and body image typically go hand in hand. However, body image is how you view your body and what you feel when you look at yourself. Where self-esteem is more about how you value yourself as a person overall. Your body image and self-esteem often coincide with each other and can impact your mental health.
